While Christ uses the dramatic image of a fiery furnace to describe hell, He is pointing to the profound spiritual reality that damnation is not an arbitrary punishment imposed by a petty God, but rather our own tragic free choice to isolate ourselves from His love; therefore, we are called to reject legalism and self-absorption in favor of a transformative, self-giving relationship with Him.
